Nutrition & Health

Our Nutrition & Health program empowers individuals to make positive lifestyle changes that lead to healthier and more fulfilling lives. Through engaging workshops, classes, and community outreach, we provide research-based education on making nutritious food choices, managing chronic diseases, increasing physical activity, and enhancing overall family well-being, helping you build skills for a lifetime of better health.

Eating like those who live in the Mediterranean Region has been shown to promote health and decrease the risk of many chronic diseases. The Mediterranean-style eating pattern incorporates the basics of healthy eating that are traditionally practiced in countries that border the Mediterranean Sea. Eating the Mediterranean way is not only healthy, it is also delicious and satisfying. Foods that you once thought of as too high in fat or unhealthy, including nuts, olive oil, olives, and whole grains, become an everyday part of your diet.

N.C. Cooperative Extension offers a variety of food safety resources and programming under the Safe Plates umbrella. These courses are designed to be evidence-based and built around adult education and behavior change theory. Safe Plates courses are taught through case studies, storytelling, activities, and discussion. These classes are interactive and encourage participants to engage with the material. Safe Plates programs not only promote knowledge, but also safe food handling practices.
