What is digital literacy?

Similar to our early experiences in literacy, digital literacy is reading digital sources with comprehension and writing digital content effectively and responsibly. We aspire for all people in Guilford County to be able to actively use its digital services. Educational offerings from N.C. Cooperative Extension can enable all people to physically navigate the devices, put reasons behind the digital information, and weigh the consequences of digital services.

Why now?

A grant from the N.C. DIT office allowed for the initiation of this new service from N.C. Cooperative Extension.

Guilford County is rich in county services to improve the quality of life. Each one works together to serve the county and each person with equity. At the core is good communication. While face to face engagement is best, the internet is a tool for communication, service enhancement and social engagement. The digital literacy service of N.C. Cooperative Extension seeks to provide educational training for workforce empowerment, digital content comprehension, digital safety & problem solving.

What active programs might be served?

Think about your unique community. How can NCCE support where you’re currently serving and how digital literacy can further your reach?

Workforce empowerment through applied digital skills. Some popular topics include digital account access (ie: Google accounts), scam prevention, introduction to artificial intelligence, social media management, etc.

Program categories:

based on the pillars of digital education

  • Information and data literacy: Internet research and news sources are not all equal and discernment is required when retrieving digital data, information and content.
  • Communication and collaboration: Navigating digital services for communication and collaboration is an exercise in participatory citizenship. Personal digital presence, identity and reputation is a matter of education and discipline.
  • Digital content creation: Just as youth learned to read and write with effectiveness and responsibility, this is equally true for creating and editing digital content. The implications can be for workforce empowerment or communication engagement. Awareness of copyright and licenses are also necessary. Knowing how to share this knowledge furthers the impact.
  • Safety: Protecting content integrity, personal data and privacy is required in digital environments. Digital practices and engagement require prudence when considering social media so that physical and mental health are preserved.
  • Problem solving: The internet is a tool for communication and can help to meet personal and community needs. It can help to shorten time gaps in receiving community services. Digital literacy can empower users to keep abreast of changes in the digital landscape and its impact on the current news and events.

Who might benefit?

County service volunteers or agency partners can be trained for their growth and increase their capacity to share that experience with others?

Adults and youth across the spectrum of Guilford County could benefit from developing their digital literacy.
