High Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) Update & Resources

(Updated: April 6, 2022, 7:08 a.m.)
Early last week a commercial flock of turkeys tested positive for a highly pathogenic strain of avian influenza (HPAI). Since then, three additional commercial turkey flocks have tested positive through surveillance testing and one additional commercial turkey flock is being tested after experiencing increased mortality rates. NCDA&CS is working with industry and USDA partners to enforce quarantine zones, continue surveillance testing, and depopulate flocks as they test positive.

Producers, both big and small, should continue to practice proper biosecurity protocols to keep domestic flocks away from wild birds, waterfowl, and any areas frequented by migratory birds. The current recommendation from NCDA&CS is that small backyard flocks remain enclosed, either in a coop or enclosed run, without access to wild birds or bodies of water that wild waterfowl frequent.  The main point here is that they do not need to have free access to the outdoors in a way that is not protected. While this is a recommendation only and not rule or law, it is one of the best ways to prevent the spread of this disease. HPAI will wipe out an entire flock when infected and is a huge threat to both the small producers and commercial poultry industry as well. If there is a concern that a flock may have symptoms of HPAI, please utilize the NCDA Animal Diagnostic Lab. Lab Locations and information can be found here: Facilities Directory
