Collapse ▲Each year the American Fruit Grower and the American Vegetable Grower magazines recognize 40 individuals under 40 years old from across the nation. These individuals are recognized for their leadership and innovation in their industries. Individuals can be farmers, researchers or in the agribusiness sector.
The Class of 2022 will be recognized in the October editions of the two magazines. They will also be recognized at the 2022 Great Lakes Fruit, Vegetable and Farm Market Expo to be held in Grand Rapids, MI in December.
The two local folks recognized this year were Jerrod Nix of Flavor Full Farms in Edneyville and Dr. Tom Kon at the Mountain Horticultural Crops Research and Extension Center in Mills River.
Jerred is Vice President of Flavor Full Farms in Hendersonville, NC where he farms with his father (Jeff). He manages the field operations, packing house, and new apple slicing operation. He has served on the Blue Ridge Apple Growers board for several years and served two terms as President. He also serves as Henderson County Farm Bureau President and is a Henderson County Soil and Water Supervisor.
Dr. Tom Kon is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Horticultural Sciences at North Carolina State University. Dr. Kon leads an applied research and extension program focused on whole plant physiology of the apple. He has a multi-state appointment and serves the southeastern apple industry (NC, SC, and GA). Dr. Kon received his B.S. from the University of Nebraska, and his M.S. and PhD from Penn State University.
