Groundhog Day will have to share the spotlight this year with the annual Winter Apple School in Henderson County. We are planning to be back to a live program this year on February 2, 2022 at Blue Ridge Community College. Pesticide credits will be available and some great new information that you don’t want to miss.
Winter Apple School has been a trusted source of information for commercial apple growers and others interested in apple production for many years. The program features a host of NC State Extension apple specialists and researchers from NC State University as the core of the program. Each of these speakers brings a unique discussion of apples from their various disciplines.
The program will run from 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with lunch provided. The meeting will be held in its traditional venue at the Technology Education and Development Center at Blue Ridge Community College. Be advised that BRCC has reinstated its mask policy, so masks will be required at all times indoors.
A topic of great interest in this year’s program will highlight the changes in the apple insurance program that are coming soon. Claire White from the USDA Risk Management Agency in Kansas City, MO will joining by Zoom to give the latest updates and answer questions.
Our guest out-of-state speaker this year is Dr. David Lockwood of the University of Tennessee. Dr. Lockwood has over 40 years of experience in commercial tree fruit production and will bring us some great insight from his career. Last year almost 100 people attended Apple School remotely. We hope to be back to our usual 200 in-person attendees for this year’s program.
An annual highlight of the meeting is the awards presentation during the BRAG Annual Meeting. The Apple Grower of the Year, Friend of the Apple Grower and Lifetime Achievement Awards are all distinguished honors announced at that time.
The cost for attendance is only $30.00 for the entire program if you register by January 17. However, this also entitles you to membership in the Blue Ridge Apple Growers Association for one year. What a bargain! Attendees who attend the entire program will receive two hours of pesticide credit. Stay posted for any late changes due to the evolving COVID pandemic by checking the Cooperative Extension Website – https://henderson.ces.ncsu.edu/ .
Registration forms and payment may be mailed to BRAG at P.O. Box 578, Edneyville, NC 28727 or dropped off at the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Henderson County Center at 100 Jackson Park Drive, Hendersonville. Credit card payments can be accepted as well by contacting Ivy Olson at Ivy_Olson@ncsu.edu. Registration forms can be obtained by clicking on the appropriate link below and are also available at the office or we will be happy to send you one via email.
