Did you know that 4-Hers are 4 times more likely to give back to their communities? The act of serving is a highly significant part of the 4-H clover. In fact, one of the H’s in 4-H stands for Hands where 4-H members pledge their hands to larger service. During the month of April, 4-Hers across the country are taking part in the “True Leaders in Service” campaign in preparation for the National 4‑H Day of Service on Saturday, April 27, 2019.

The North Carolina State 4-H Council’s theme this year is “Dare to Stand Together and Serve” and they invite everyone to join them in recognizing the work of first responders in our local community who are the first ones on site when community members need them. We can say thank you in a variety of ways like creating a thank you basket with goodies and thank you cards to send to a local fire station or police department.

This campaign of True leaders in Service can help youth understand why it is important to give of their time to people and encourages them to plan service projects that tackle community challenges. It’s a humbling and rewarding experience knowing that you can put a smile on someone’s faces when you give.

Other opportunities to serve the local community could involve projects geared towards environmental sustainability or related to providing food and other donations to those in need. Volunteering is a fun and fulfilling activity for families to do together where they could serve meals at a soup kitchen or clean up the yard for an elderly neighbor. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said-“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, What are you doing for others?”
